Wink An ILS landing

Hi Simmers For FS2004

I got recently a lot of private emails about guys asking me how to do an autopilot/GPS vectoring, ILS landing. So I've decided to do a short flight and put in on paper for new and inexperienced simmers. Here it goes:

Select the B737-400 (Orbit). Set the weather for clear skies. Load an IFR fligtplan from Buffalo Intl(KBUF), New York to Albany Intl(KALB), New York. Put 26000ft in the altitude window.

Take-off from Buffalo, climb straight to 26000ft (follow instructions from ATC).
When on 26000ft Altitude, the following must be "on" in autopilot:

F/D Flight director
Nav/GPS switch - On GPS mode
A/T throttle - Armed
A/P autopilot - On
'Altitude' - 26000 in window + hold button on
'IAS' - 280 in window + hold button on
'NAV' button - ON

--------------------------------

After a while ATC will call: "Orbit, descend and maintain 15000ft"
Select 15000 on the altitude window - a/c will descend by itself at -1800ft/min.After a while ATC: "Orbit you're 53 mles west, turn right Hdg 145, Expect vectors ILS rwy 1 apprch"Tune 145 in Hdg window and click 'Hdg' hold button. A/c will turn by itself. While a/c turns, tune 010 in course window (for rwy 'one').After a while ATC: "Orbit descend and maintain 4100ft" (whatever alt)Tune 4100ft in altitude window and -1200ft in vert speed window.

Now go quickly to GPS(Shift +3), to set up vectors:
step 1) Click 'PROC' button ('select Approach' will be highlighted)
2) Click 'ENTER' button (ILS 01 will flash)
3) Click 'ENTER' button ('Vectors' will flash)
4) Click 'ENTER' button ('Load' will flash)
Now DON'T click 'ENTER' button - click big white arrow on top right of 'cursor
button. ('Activate' will flash)
5) Click 'ENTER' button (page of approach setup will display)
6) Click 'FPL'button (main map display)

To get ILS frequency on GPS:
1) Click big white arrow on top right of 'cursor' button again.
2) Then click small white arrow on bottom left of 'cursor' button once.
3) Click 'Cursor' button (KALB will be highlighted)
4) Click big white arrow top right several times till you get to ILS 01 frequency - 109.50Put the 109.50 in the NAV1 radio window(Shift +2). Make sure it's in the left window, using the 'switch mode' button.

NOW, when descending through 11500ft, slowly bring your speed (IAS window) down from 280kts to 250kts. Do it at counting speed.

Ater a while ATC: "Orbit turn left Hdg 115" (whatever Hdg)
Tune Hdg numbers to 115.
ATC again: "Orbit turn left Hdg 100"
Tune Hdg 100. (ATC will ALWAYS set you up with a 90 degree diff to
Runway Hdg - wich is a base leg)

After a while you will see pink tri-angles on the artificial horizen (the ball wich look like earth). One tri-angle in the middle-right, pointing right. (ILS slope)
One tri-angle on the bottom-right, pointing up. (ILS localiser)

ATC again: "Orbit you're 25 miles south, turn left Hdg 040, descend and maintain 2500ft - clear ILS runwy 1......."Now tune altitude numbers to 2500ft and vert speed to -1200ft/minClick 'NAV' hold button(light will be on).
A/c will now turn right by itself, following the GPS vectors that you've set up earlier.Start to bring your speed down slowly to 150kts(IAS window), and select flaps (F7) When passing through the following speeds:

235kts - 1deg
225kts - 2deg
210kts - 5deg
190kts - 10deg + Landing Gear
175kts - 20deg
Final apprch 150kts - 25deg

Now when the a/c turn through Hdg 015, Click the 'NAV/GPS' button to NAV mode (left). The a/c will follow the ILS localiser.

You will see on artificial horison ("blue - brown" ball), that the pink tri-angle will be on top right
and the bottom tri-angle should be near the centre/middle.
Now watch the top right pink tri-angle (slope indicator). It will start moving down as you come closer to the invissible glide slope.
When the top right tri-angle is in the middle or aligned with the small rectangular block on its right - Click the 'APP' button (approach hold).
The a/c will start descending, following the glide slope, and should be inline with the runway centre line in the distance.

When you come close to the runway and feel comfortable, disengage the autopilot and land the aircraft!

NOTE: Feel free at any time to hit Pause (P) on your keyboard and tune the numbers in your autopilot windows after ATC's instructions. Things can happen fast!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Default istead of turning of AP

i keep going till aprox 500 meters from the runway than i turn of speed hold and at about 250 meters i turn of auto hold speed it than practicaly land itself
i find if i turn of auto pilot the plane goes up before it comes down even with the speed at idle. this is at IFR i do this all the time and it never fails.joseph

Default Great thanks

This is great. I downloaded the GPS 500 manual from Garmin's website, and it works exacly the same. I did a very short IFR test flight from FAWK to FALA in the Baron 58. And was lined up at FALA perfectly. It was my best landing ever. The whole flight was done with autopilot as my joystick packed up and i cannot aford a new one now. Realy great stuff King Airlines.
