If the download was a zip file, uncompress into a Temp folder, the file with a utility such as 7 Zip http://www.7-zip.org/ Most of these contain a ReadMe.txt file that can be read with Notepad or other text editors. The ReadMe.txt file should advise where to place the file or files. There may be a file folder for the aircraft and a folder for gauges & panels, those go into separate folders in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Then start FSX and the aircraft should show in the Current Aircraft selections.

Can you advise what the aircraft type and name of the file and link to the site where you downloaded the files?

Yes you need all add-ons placed in folders that relate to panel, sound and texture especially if the aircraft was not included in FSX originally or if the aircraft is a repaint from original aircraft installed.
